The Saxonian Colonel Ollendorf is seething with anger, after the Polish countess Laura rebuffs his advances with her fan. Without further ado, he engages two prisoners – Symon and his friend Jan, the “Beggar Students” – who are ordered to pose as aristocrats, with the purpose of then marrying the foolish countess and her sister, and thus ruining their reputation. Millöcker’s masterpiece is set in Krakow of the 18th century and enjoys great popularity. This is in part thanks to its colourful compositions such as, among others, Ollendorf’s resentful “Ach, ich hab sie ja nur auf die Schulter geküsst” (I only kissed her on the shoulder) and the duet, “ich setz den Fall” (I assume the following) but also due to the contrasts between Saxony and Poland during the reign of August the Strong, which have affectionately been set in scene
